My Family, the 5K, & Pope St. John Paul II

Recently, our city hosted a Crop Hunger Walk to raise money and awareness for all those who go hungry. It was through our parish that we learned about the efforts of this organization, so my husband and I decided to have our family participate. It was a beautiful day gathering with wonderful people in the area to help others.

We've never attended one of these events, so my husband and I assumed that it would probably be one of those walks where you walk a few laps around a baseball field. Well, much to our surprise, the walk began at a baseball field, but then proceeded to go on through the streets of downtown for 3.1 miles.  That's right...it was a 5K! Now what I haven't mentioned is that we have four kids between the ages of 8 and 18 months. This was going to be interesting!

We didn't realize it was a 5K until about a quarter of a mile into it.  It was also then that our oldest stated that his legs were going to fall off if it didn't end soon.  Honestly, the thought of turning around did not enter my mind, but the fear of how this was going to go started creeping in. In a way, I started to dread then next couple of miles, and thought about how this walk was going to be torturous.  BUT, then the words of my friend Pope St. John Paul II, the words that he echoed from Christ, came to mind: "Be not afraid!". Embrace this, dispel the fear, and let's go! We can do this as a family!

We had a stroller for the baby, but it was up to the rest of us to walk/run. My husband and I gave piggy back rides to all the kids at various times throughout the entire walk (at least 26 extra pounds). The boys helped push the stroller with either their baby brother or sister in it.  The baby was on my shoulders carrying my water bottle for me, and handing it to me when I needed it (he smacked me on the head when he wanted it though). We were getting closer!

Then it happened...towards the end, my daughter stated that she had to go to the bathroom...OF COURSE.  So we had to split up. Half of us finished the walk,  while the other half went to the Marriott for a potty break. I finished with the oldest and youngest in the family (and a large stuffed Minnie Mouse our daughter brought), and we anxiously waited for my husband and the two middle kids to come across the finish line. I saw them in the crowd...AND...WE DID IT!! Not only that, but we were JOYful! My husband and I were so proud of our family.

As I reflect on this event and ponder the many writings of Pope St. Jon Paul II, I have been affirmed in the ways in which we are raising our family (not an easy task). Sure it's not always great, and I don't always have the best dispositions; however, we correct our mistakes, journey on, pray together, support each other, trust in God and continue on the path of love.  Amazing how the Jesus and the saints continue to speak to us. Beautiful!

Yesterday was Pope St. John Paul II's feast day. Words can not express how much this man has done for me. I am overjoyed every time I get to ask him personally to intercede for me and my family. It's a dream come true to have him assist me in my vocation through his many prayers and words. Thank you Papa, and please continue to pray for us as we journey through this life towards the next!
